Queen Elizabeth sends her first tweet, opens Information Age exhibit at London’s Science Museum...

While the official account of the British Monarchy was set up in April 2009, gaining hundreds of thousands of followers since then, the Queen herself had never tweeted.

The Queen, referring to herself as Elizabeth R., tapped out her first tweet from the official Twitter account of Buckingham Palace about the occasion.
A statement from the museum said director Ian Blatchford had invited Queen Elizabeth to mark the occasion on social media.

“I mentioned earlier that Queen Victoria took a great interest in the invention of the telephone, and Your Majesty has followed in this tradition of embracing new technology,” he told her. “You made the first live Christmas broadcast in 1957 and an event relished by historians took place on [March 26, 1976], when you became the first monarch to send an email, during a visit to the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment. May I now invite you to join me so that you may send your first tweet.”

The tweet’s author was then verified by the @BritishMonarchy account with a follow-up tweet and a photo of the Queen sending the message.

Exclusive: Chad says Nigeria deal with Boko Haram to free girls is still on...

Chad said it believed Nigeria's secret deal with Boko Haram Islamists to free more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls would go ahead despite the breakdown of a truce, and added the key to the agreement was a prisoner swap.
"Quite possibly, those that are fighting are dissidents that even they aren't able to control. So far, there is no reason for others to doubt this agreement," Moussa Mahamat Dago, the No. 2 at Chad's foreign ministry, told Reuters late on Thursday.
"The starting condition of Boko Haram was the liberation of some of their members ... That is the compensation," said Dago, who has seen a summary of the deal reached in Chad last month.

"We remain optimistic. The two sides agreed to find a negotiated solution and to show their good faith, they already freed some hostages and announced a ceasefire.”

Rape victims storm National Assembly

Rape victims yesterday converged on the National Assembly complex Abuja to seek accelerated passage of the Sexual Offences Bill.
The Bill has been pending at the two chambers of the National Assembly for over two years.
Lawmakers, particularly the women, fought back tears yesterday as they listened to the pathetic stories of the rape victims.
The affected ladies shared their experiences in the hands of their violators.
They were at the legislative complex to inform senators and House of Representatives members on the need to pass the Bill to prevent further sexual offences.
The rape victims took part in a mock tribunal/court proceeding on sexual and gender based violence, anchored by the National Assembly Women Affairs Committee and the Legislative Advocacy Coalition for Violence in Nigeria.
The ladies painfully recalled how they were sexually assaulted by men, who were old enough to be their fathers.
They also recalled how their efforts to seek redress in courts were frustrated because of weak laws against such crime or a lack of such laws.
The violated women, who covered their faces when they gave details of how they were sexually assaulted, urged the women lawmakers to save other ladies – either of their ages or much younger than them – from sexual assault.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) and Senator Chris Anyanwu (Imo East), who received the distraught women, described rape as the most wicked crime against the womenfolk.
The senators vowed to use the legislative machinery available to them to ensure that relevant bills, which seek to protect women and children against violence, are passed before the end of the current legislative year.
The Founding Director of Women Aid Collective Dr. Joy Ezeilo said the purpose of the mock tribunal/court was to spotlight cases of gender-based violence in Nigeria.
Ezeilo said the organisers also wanted to use the event to raise the voices of the victims and survivors to take urgent action on the appropriate laws that would protect women and vulnerable groups.
