Call it 'Threshold' no more. The next and last major version of Microsoft's Windows client operating system will be called Windows 10 when it is released next year. While many of the features expected in the next major version of Microsoft's Windows client operating system have leaked over the past few months, the official name of that operating system had not.
But on September 30, during a preview event for that operating system, Microsoft officials took the wraps off the new name, which is Windows 10.
The latest software will run on a variety of devices and is what Microsoft is calling "our greatest enterprise platform ever."
Users will be able to switch between tablet and "mouse and keyboard mode," he said, adding that "[we're] committed to supporting these touch scenarios."
Microsoft also emphasized that more 1.5 billion people are using Windows today, but added its now a "new time for Windows."
Windows 10 will come with customizable live tiles in the new Start menu — the removal of it on Windows 8 was among one of the biggest criticisms of the platform. Microsoft said the experience should feel "super natural" to Windows 7 users.
Microsoft is expected to release a preview test build of Windows 10 sometime in the next few days. The company is expected to finalize Windows 10 by the spring of 2015, according to sources.
Microsoft is here to stay. Can't wait to feel the windows 10
