Microsoft is slowly releasing tidbits about the next big release of Windows 10 and today it shared details on how it’s worked to free up more storage space on computers running the OS.
In a blog post today, the company detailed a new compression algorithm that saves 1.5GB of storage on 32-bit machines and 2.6GB of storage on 64-bit machines.
According to the company, Windows uses smart compression techniques to avoid a performance hit on your machine. When upgrading to Windows 10, the computer assesses its own performance and determines what compression factor to use.
Microsoft has also improved the Windows recovery tools to use less space. They no longer require a separate recovery image on disk to restore Windows to its original state, offering a saving of up to 12GB depending on the manufacturer.
If you were desperate for a few extra gigabytes, Windows 10 might just save the day.
