The Nexus 6 is official and the big news is it is BIG. Google has jumped on the phablet craze and create a handset which not only goes head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus, but also the incredibly popular Samsung Galaxy Note range.
The handset will be available to pre-order in two weeks time on October 29th, with shipping expected in November. Both a SIM-free variant, and a carrier subsidised version, will be available. Consumers can choose from 32 GB or 64 GB of storage.
The Nexus 6 continues that size increase with a 5.96 inch screen. Running at QHD resolution and 2560×1440 the screen offers a pixel density of 493 ppi. That’s going to have a huge impact on battery life, so it’s good to see that the battery is a hefty 3220 mAh.
Inside the handset, Google and Motorola have chosen to use the latest Snapdragon 805 processor (matching the previously mentioned Droid Turbo) running at 2.7 GHz, and have paired it up with 3 GB of RAM. The hardware will allow the 13 megapixel camera to shoot in 4K UHD (2160p) out of the box, and the front camera receives a 2 megapixel sensor for selfless and video calling.
Camera: 13 Megapixels, f2.0 lens, Dual Flash, Optical Image Stabilisation.
The camera on the Nexus 5 had a difficult launch, but the combination of its integrated optical image stabilisation (OIS) and some smart firmware updates means it still holds its own today.
But Google is looking to avoid teething troubles this time around and the Nexus 6 hits the road running with a 13 megapixel sensor that retains OIS and marries it with a more powerful dual flash ‘ring’ for more natural flash performance as seen on the Moto X. The aforementioned 805 chipset (like the 801 before it) also supports 4K video recording and simultaneous 4K video playback on multiple devices.
