Android 8.0 is officially "Oreo", set to roll out to devices soon

Google Inc revealed today the next version of Android, which is version 8 will be called Android Oreo. The company launched Android Oreo via a live stream, side by side while the solar eclipse was taken form.

Origin of the name

Google affirms that the name ‘Oreo’ has been licensed from Nabisco - a partnered company.

However, Google is known for partnering with companies in branding its Android name. Recall, Android 4.4 was called KitKat, through that partnership we saw Android-branded KitKat bars in stores all around the world. Who’s looking forward to Oreo boxes with Android branding?

What’s new in Android 8.0 Oreo?

Here’s a quick rundown of the new features Google plans to innovate with Android Oreo:
Firstly, there are background changes like background limits for apps which are designed to improve battery life, improvements on Bluetooth audio, enhancing the security front with Google Play Protect. More so, Android Oreo offers important changes for apps specifically built for Oreo to aid their system behavior and ensure faster boot speeds (up to twice as fast on the Pixel), plus support for Android Instant Apps.

Other notable additional features from Oreo are: some user-facing additions such as adaptive notification dots, wider support for picture-in-picture mode, over 60 new emoji, a new look for media notifications and the quick settings menu, a redesigned setting menu, adaptive icons, notification channels, and, of course, the Octopus Easter egg.

According to Google, Android Oreo will soon be available on all your devices. It plans to begin the upgrade on all current Pixel and Nexus devices – the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Nexus Player, while other major hardware companies get the upgrade before the end of 2017.
