Five Key learnings from my entrepreneurial journey by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji at CWC 2018

I recently attended a Coworking conference organized by Venia Business Hub in Lagos, Nigeria. The experience shared by amazing minds at the event was phenomenal. Most importantly, from the point of realizing that coworking is an interface for building and developing innovation that can serve as the needed desirable change on the face of the earth.

However, I believe these highlighted key excerpts from Iyinoluwa Aboyeji featured interview will inspire the way you shape your business and ideas going forward:

1. The first time I really connected to the idea of technology, it's something that you don't just consume rather something you can BUILD.

2. Try to be open and transparent with them. Give them more of the stake in the company than you get.

3. The best companies in the world, the greatest companies in the world, wherever you find them are million dollar companies on their own but decided to come together and because of that, they are now able to build a billion dollar company.

4. Reflecting on my entrepreneur career, my biggest win is all about the TEAM, literally. Andela was a superhero team, we got an entrepreneur who had IPO his company, together with Ph.D. in education from Harvard, who was dropping out and who had run MasterCard education grant program forever. We brought together the guy who build Pin Ocean Labs, brought together somebody who helped build Pivolat Lab engineering. So, the team that was brought together at Andela were a superstar team and so it made it possible to build a company that has the kind of outcome  Andela enjoys today.

5. If there is one aspect you don't want to cheat on, it's that! The entire thing you are building is your team. So, you need to build the best possible team. If it means that you are going to bring somebody who is going to take 30-50% of your company. If you believe they are the best person in that space and you believe you will build the biggest company by working with them, it only makes sense.

The other part of entrepreneurship that is so hard, it doesn't make sense for you to not cheat on that part on getting the best team. So, That is how my mind always thinks.

The idea basically is you find the best person you could possibly find in that space, that is the only way to build.

How does an entrepreneur build? How can you spot the right set of people with skills? What are those things to do to attract these set of people?

1. Build genuine relationships: If you go through life trying to find people that you can use, you will end up being used.
2. In business, it's held together by two things: There are two kinds of relationship. The relationship with the team that can help you execute and relationship with customers that will buy.

The kind of relationship that matters for you, as a business owner are those two relationships.

So when you meet people and you have genuine relationships. The first question that you need to attune yourself to asking people is how can I help you? And it's in how can I help you that you start to see everything.

It's in those two things that you end up finding the biggest opportunities.
