The former United States Secretary of State and presidential aspirant for the 2016 election, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, recently made headlines on social media when she joined LinkedIn, the largest global career networking site.
Reports posted online said the former first lady had returned to the labour market. Perhaps, the sarcasm was informed by the fact that the platform is mostly driven by career urge.
Like those looking for opportunities to start or build new careers, Clinton took to LinkedIn to seek an opportunity to become the next American President.
Interestingly, many Nigerians, who the ordinary people consider to have succeeded in terms of careers and those sitting on multi-billion naira businesses, are also on LinkedIn. They may not be looking for ‘jobs’ like Mrs. Clinton is currently doing. But they are selling a basket of skills similar to what job seekers are flaunting, and they are getting endorsed by their friends and colleagues.
The richest African and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, is not missing the buzz in LinkedIn. With 184 connections on the platform, the billionaire is endorsed in diverse areas of business, with marketing-related skills topping the list.
Dangote’s top skills, according to the LinkedIn community, are marketing strategy, strategic planning, marketing, new business development, entrepreneurship and sales.
Others are social media marketing, team building, production development and sales management.
Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, is among the most visible Nigerian corporate leaders on Twitter. He seems to replicate his Twitter success and branding on LinkedIn where he enjoys a robust profiling.
Elumelu is tipped for skills, such as investment, private equity banking, emerging market, mergers and acquisitions, leadership and corporate finance. These are followed by business strategy, leadership start-up, risk management, management consulting, business planning and valuation.
Elumelu’s page, unlike many others in its category, is uniquely branded and it carries the full career profile and curricula vitae of the former banker.
In fact, there is no piece of information about Elumelu’s experiences and honours that is not published on his LinkedIn page.
