Nigerian Communications Commission Celebrates Girls in ICT Day Event, Supports Digital Skilled Women

It's no doubt the effect of Information and Communication Technology as an empowering tool, creating diverse endless possibilities to humanity.

Every year on the fourth Thursday in April, ITU and the global technology community celebrate International ‘Girls in ICT Day’, an awareness-raising initiative designed to promote tech studies and careers to a new generation of girls and young women.

ITU estimates a skills shortfall of over two million jobs in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector within the next five years. Girls and young women who learn coding, apps development and computer science will not only be well-placed for a successful career in the ICT sector, but ICT skills are rapidly becoming a strong advantage for students in just about any other field they might choose to pursue.

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) joined other nations in celebrating the Girls in ICT Day at the Merit House, Abuja. With the theme, "Expanding Horizons, Changing Attitudes."

The Head, Information Technology, NCC, Ms Tokunbo Oyeleye giving her welcome speech said, "Technology opens a door of possibilities to girls and women. Let's ensure they receive the right support and encouragement to thrive.

A digital skilled generation of women would bring about a refreshing dimension in the quest to improve and diversify the nation's economy."

Highlights of NCC's achievement towards Girls in ICT Day include;

1) Setting up a Digital Access Programmer (DAP) which provides computers and internet access to secondary and vocational schools across the country.
2) Emphasizing and promoting the support beyond girls schools alone, to encourage women to embrace the digital world.
3) Provision of sponsorships to successful participants who support the International Girls in ICT Day initiative.

It's worthy to note that, the Nigerian ICT industry is not only gender sensitive but also provides an enabling environment for women to lead the ICT sector.

  4. If only all the countries in the world had something like this. I love that this focuses on building careers for women, because we are often discriminated when it comes to success and achieving it.

  8. i do not know about the possible gender equality issue women are facing in Nigeria. But if there is (eg. like how women shouldn't be doing techy jobs) then this is definitely a great movement to help women break away from the social norms.
